Indian Players to Play in SLPL

Ready For Big game

Sri Lanka Cricket  has confirmed that as many as 12 Indian players will feature in the inaugural edition of the upcoming Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) T20 tournament according to a report in 'islandcricket' website.
The tournament which is all set to get underway on July 19 will also see several other international stars including the likes of David Warner and Shaun Tait from Australia and Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard from the West Indies, who are currently playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL), playing in the Island nation.
The tournament will also provide a platform for the Pakistani players to showcase their talents who found no takers in the IPL.
Shahid Afridi, who will be captaining a team in the tournament, along with Shoaib Akhtar, Sohail Tanvir and Umar Akmal will represent the Pakistani talent on show.
South Africa's dashing batsman Herschelle Gibbs and veteran Makhaya Ntini are amongst the other big names on show.
All matches will be held at the R Premadasa Stadium here.
The Indian players who figure in the list posted by the website include Dinesh Karthik, Irfan Pathan, Manish Pandey, Manoj Tiwary, Paul Valthaty, Ravindra Jadeja, Saurabh Tiwary, Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar, Munaf Patel, Praveen Kumar and Ravichandran Ashwin.
However, the inclusion of Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel and Ashwin has come as a surprise as the trio will be on national duty as India is scheduled to visit England during the month of July for a four-match Test series followed by five-match one-day series and a one-off Twenty20 match.
Other international stars in the list include Warner, Tait, Callum Ferguson, Daniel Christian (Australia), Tamim Iqbal (Bangladesh), Kevin O'Brien (Ireland), Daniel Vettori (New Zealand), Imran Nazir, Afridi, Akhtar, Tanvir, Akmal, Wahab Riaz (Pakistan), Albie Morkel, Gibbs, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Ntini (South Africa), Gayle, Danza Hyatt, Darren Bravo, Pollard (West Indies).

SLPL 2011

Sri Lanka Cricket have confirmed that their rejuvenated Twenty20 competition will include foreign players and will be played between July 19 and August 4 this year.

The first edition of the Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) will involve seven provinces, who will each be allowed to field four foreign players per match - the same limit employed by the Indian Premier League.

Basnahira Bears, Kandurata Kites, Nagenahira Nagas, Ruhuna Rhinos, Uthura Oryxes, Uva Unicorns and Wayamba Wolves are the seven teams who will take part in the inaugural edition, with two more provinces slated to join the action within the next three years.

The competition will involve 24 matches, with all of the teams playing each other once before the top four teams qualify for the semi-finals.

All of the games will be held at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, with the winner going on to compete in the Champions League Twenty20 in September.

Pakistan's limited-overs captain Shahid Afridi has already confirmed that he will captain one of the sides, having been offered $35,000 for the first season, with the amount doubling in 2012.

Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard and Herschelle Gibbs are also believed to have signed up for the tournament, while the likes of Shoaib Akhtar, Abdul Razzaq, Kevin O'Brien and Daniel Christian are also expected to take part.

Although wages will be significantly lower than those offered in the IPL, the tournament comes at a good time for international players from New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa, who have no international engagements lined up at that time.

It is a particular bonus for players from Pakistan, who have been excluded from the IPL due to political wrangling ever since the Mumbai terrorist attacks at the end of 2008.

Sri Lankan T20 league Tournament

Sri Lanka Cricket is organising a Twenty20 league in July and August 2011 featuring their top players as well as internationals from India, Australia, Pakistan, West Indies and South Africa. The tournament, which will have five regional teams led by senior Sri Lankan cricketers, is the latest in a series of Twenty20 leagues, with some degree of international participation, that have been created over the past few years.

The league will be run by the Singapore-based Somerset Entertainment, which won the organisational rights and is now looking at securing a TV deal. It is understood to have approached around 35 international players including Yuvraj Singh, Kieron Pollard, Chris Gayle, Yusuf Pathan and Shahid Afridi, and most of Sri Lanka's leading cricketers.

Salaries in the league will be on the lower side; one estimate suggested three salary slabs with the highest at $30,000, which is what a mid-level player would get for each game of the IPL.

The BCCI is understood to have given the league its blessing and the tournament's timing - it will coincide with India's Test series in England - will suit India's limited-overs specialists. An Indian player, who was one of the first to be approached by the organisers, said he was made to understand that the tournament was being held with the approval of the Indian board.

While the league will be a lower-profile event compared to other Twenty20 tournaments, it is likely to benefit from the fact that many players will be free from international commitments at that time. It is also likely to draw in several players who are no longer active in international cricket. Shoaib Akhtar is one player who is understood to be a certainty for the tournament and Herschelle Gibbs is also believed to have been approached.

The league will also be a boon for players from Pakistan, who currently are not part of the IPL and whose international exposure has been limited because of security issues.

Indian New Coach

In keeping with the no-frills coach they desire, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today announced Duncan Fletcher as the man who would take over from Gary Kirsten, without much ado. The former Zimbabwe captain and ex-England coach was given a contract for two years.

Fletcher’s name was approved at the BCCI Working Committee meeting here. Only current president Shashank Manohar and president-elect and secretary N Srinivasan seemed to have known about the choice.

Sources say while the BCCI was keen on hiring current England coach Andy Flower, he was reluctant. Another contender, former New Zealand captain and current Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming, couldn’t make the grade as he lacked enough international experience.

Fletcher comes with great credentials to fill Kirsten’s big boots, having shepherded England to their Ashes win against Australia in 2005, the first time England won the tournament since 1986-87.

Under Fletcher the England cricket team achieved famous series victories away to Sri Lanka, Pakistan and South Africa between 2000-2004. In 2004 England won an English record 8 consecutive tests, beating New Zealand 3-0 and West Indies 4-0 at home respectively, before winning the first test in South Africa. His most famous and largest achievement however came in September 2005 he became the first coach of the English team to win an Ashes series for 18 years when England secured 2-1 victory over AustraliFletcher received heavy criticism from all quarters after preferring Ashley Giles to Monty Panesar as England's main spinner in the first two Tests of the 2006-07 Ashes series; Giles took three wickets in two Tests, while Panesar, when given the chance in the third Test, took five wickets in the first innings and three wickets in the second innings. Following defeat to Australia by 206 runs in the third test on 18 December 2006 which saw England relinquish the Ashes 15 months after gaining them, the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed that Fletcher's position as head coach was under review. Despite a brief reprieve in early 2007 when England won the Commonwealth Bank Series, Fletcher came under increased criticism as England performed poorly in the World Cup, which culminated in a nine wicket loss to South Africa in which the team were booed off the field by England's Barmy Army. It was later announced, on 19 April 2007, that his 8 year tenure as coach was to end following England's final Super 8 match against theWest Indies on Saturday 21 April 2007.In lieu of this winning the Ashes after 18 years, Fletcher was conferred with the OBE. On 13 September 2005 Fletcher was awarded British citizenship after a five year wait. Although both his parents and all his grandparents were ethnically English, i.e., of English/British descent, Fletcher had been denied citizenship by virtue of the fact he spent most of his time abroad - touring with the England team. After the Ashes series win of 2005, the Home Secretary, Charles Clarke, intervened to award Fletcher his long-sought citizenship.^[2]

England's test record improved almost as soon as Fletcher took over in 1999, however the fortunes of the one-day side plummeted under Fletcher and ironically the only major success in one day cricket under the Fletcher era came a mere three months before his exit, as England won the Commonwealth Bank Series by defeating Australia early in 2007.

In November 2007 Fletcher confirmed that he was considering a switch to rugby, stating "I'd like to be a rugby consultant. I have some ideas...I love my rugby, I would rather watch rugby than cricket. I'm passionate about it, it's the game I'd like to have been involved in."

On 5 November 2007 Fletcher's autobiography 'Behind The Shades' was published.

In November 2008 it was announced that Fletcher would take on a consultancy role with Hampshire for the 2009 season,^[3] days later he took a similar role with the South Africa team ahead of their Test series with Bangladesh and Australia.^[4]

Fletcher has been appointed as the coach of the India cricket team on 27 April 2011^[5], with a two-year contract. Though the India team resumes International Cricket with a tour of the West Indies in June 2011, he is unlikely to be assume charge till India tour England in late July. Fletcher was one of the leading candidates for appointment as coach of the India national cricket team. ^[6]. Fletcher bagged the top job in the India national cricket team ahead of names like former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming and former Zimbabwe skipper Andy Flower. Fletcher is reported to be outgoing India coach Gary Kirsten's recommendation.^[7]
